Why Domicile Matters
As a U.S. digital nomad, you need a legal domicile; a "permanent" address for tax, voting, banking, and legal purposes. Most digital nomads choose Texas, Florida, or South Dakota because they have no state income tax and are RV-friendly.
The Three Best States
Texas
Pros:
- No state income tax
- Major airports (Houston, Dallas, Austin)
- Easy to establish domicile with Escapees mail service
- Strong RV community and resources
Cons:
- Higher vehicle registration fees than SD
- May require in-person visits for some processes
Florida
Pros:
- No state income tax
- Excellent international flight connections (Miami, Orlando)
- Large nomad and expat community
- Warm climate for winter returns
Cons:
- More expensive vehicle registration than SD
- Hurricane risk if you maintain property
South Dakota
Pros:
- No state income tax
- Lowest vehicle registration fees
- Very RV-friendly laws
- Fast and easy to establish domicile (can be done in 1-2 days)
Cons:
- Fewer direct flights (most connect through major hubs)
- Cold winters if you visit
Quick Decision Framework
Choose Texas if: You want major airports and don't mind slightly higher costs.
Choose Florida if: You travel internationally often and prefer warm weather.
Choose South Dakota if: You want the absolute lowest cost and fastest setup.
