Our Story

We are Casey & Karen Cannady... and our journey to full-time digital nomad life wasn't a straight line! It was more like navigating a field of rakes, learning as we went. We met in October 2012 and married in September 2013, embarking on our adventure together later in life than most.

Casey spent decades climbing the corporate ladder, chasing promotions, and feeling increasingly drained by a system that didn't quite fit. Life threw a couple curveballs: Casey faced significant physical setbacks requiring spinal fusion and bicep repair. While recovery was challenging, it became the catalyst for a profound shift in perspective. In December 2022, we finally made the leap from traditional "sticks-and-bricks" living to full-time digital nomad life... and not for the Instagram fantasy of beach laptops and perfect sunsets... but for the practical reality: building location independence while prioritizing our well-being and financial security. Retirement isn't guaranteed, and we wanted to design a life that reflected that truth.

Karen had been working as a Realtor, which she couldn't do from the road. She realized the marketing skills she learned in advertising her own business could easily translate to helping other small business owners, plus allow her to work from anywhere. She reached out to a few friends who owned food trucks and took on their marketing and has grown her business, KPC Unlimited, from there, allowing her to build a career and a community that follows us wherever we go.

We quickly realized how lacking reliable resources were for those seeking this kind of freedom... especially for Americans. We spent months wrestling with domicile, mail forwarding, banking, health insurance, and taxes; issues often glossed over or misunderstood in generic nomad guides. We learned the hard way, making mistakes along the path to establishing a stable foundation.

In his late forties, Casey was tested for and diagnosed with AuDHD (severe combined ADHD + moderate Aspberger's). While Karen had suspected it since we met, this revelation was transformative for Casey and validating for Karen, with both finally understanding years of masking, sensory overload, and the exhausting feeling of constantly trying to conform.

All of this led us to a desire to help others in ways we did not receive along our journey and help prevent some of the struggles we had. That's why we created Nomad Black Book: to share our knowledge, offer clear guidance, and build a community of fellow travelers navigating this exciting - and sometimes complex - lifestyle. We're committed to honesty and transparency, sharing both the triumphs and the challenges of life on the road. Join us as we continue to explore, learn, and pave the way for others seeking location independence.

Why Nomad Black Book Exists

This site is the guide we wish we'd had when we started. It's designed to:

  • Provide U.S.-specific guidance (domicile, taxes, banking, mail forwarding, health care, etc.)
  • Reduce overwhelm with clear, structured steps
  • Include ND-friendly systems (templates, checklists, low-decision fatigue approaches)
  • Focus on sustainability over aesthetics

Our Values

  • Transparency: If we recommend something, we'll tell you why and what the tradeoffs are.
  • Neurodivergent-Friendly: Our content is designed with ND brains in mind: structured, low-decision fatigue, overwhelm-reducing.
  • No Fluff: We focus on practical, actionable guidance-not Instagram-perfect lifestyles.
  • Honesty: We'll tell you what we don't know and when something might not work for you and while we won’t bad-mouth a business or service online where people can’t get the context, we will be brutally honest if you reach out directly
  • Respect for ND needs: Neurodivergent brains aren't broken... they just need systems that actually work for them.
  • No gatekeeping: You don't need to be rich or fearless to go nomad. You just need a plan. If we find something awesome, we’re going to share it!

What's Next

Right now, we're focused on helping U.S. based professionals (especially ND folks) escape the 9-to-5 and go nomad. Over time, we'll be adding:

  • Group coaching programs
  • Digital products (templates, checklists, planning tools)
  • Community features (discussions, resource sharing)
  • Location-specific guides (laws, customs, ND-friendly spots)
